North West Maui Conditions 🟒

Location Rating Visibility Wind Speed Waves Currents
Honolua Bay 8.5 🟒 Good E 10-15 mph 0-1 ft Flat Low
Slaughterhouse Beach 8.5 🟒 Good E 10-15 mph 0-1 ft Flat Low
Kapalua Bay 9.0 🟒 Good E 10-15 mph 0-1 ft Flat Low
Napili Bay 8.5 🟒 Good E 10-15 mph 0-1 ft Flat Low

Description: Northwest bays are calm and protected from the new long-period south swell. Nearshore surfaces are flat. East trade winds are blowing at 10–15 mph. Local streams are completely clear, leaving entries excellent and free of any stream runoff for good water visibility.

Kaanapali Conditions 🟒

Location Rating Visibility Wind Speed Waves Currents
Airport Beach 7.5 🟒 Good/Fair E 10-15 mph 1-2 ft Ripple Light
Black Rock 7.0 🟒 Good/Fair E 10-15 mph 2-4 ft Wrap Light-Moderate

Description: Marginal: The new south swell is filtering into the area, creating a wave wrap around the point at Black Rock. Moving sand around the point limits visibility somewhat from to good to fair, while Airport Beach stays flat and clear under an offshore wind shadow.

Lahaina Conditions 🟒

Location Rating Visibility Wind Speed Waves Currents
Baby Beach Lahaina 8.0 🟒 Good Variable < 5 mph 0-1 ft Inside Low
Olowalu 7.0 🟒 Good/Fair Variable < 5 mph 1-3 ft Wrap Light

Description: Leeward reefs are calm with flat water lines under light morning breezes under 5 mph. Baby Beach is completely sheltered behind the outer reef wall. Olowalu reef flats have a minor 1–3 ft swell wrap wrapping across the shallow coral gardens, allowing water clarity to settle into a good-to-fair range.

South Maui Conditions 🟑

Location Rating Visibility Wind Speed Waves Currents
Charlie Young 5.5 🟑 Fair E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Breakers Light-Moderate
Kamaole 1, 2 & 3 6.5 🟑 Fair E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Breakers Moderate Surge
Ulua Beach 6.0 🟑 Fair E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Breakers Moderate Surge
Makena Landing 4.5 🟑 Hazy E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Heavy Surge Moderate
Maluaka Beach 4.5 🟑 Hazy E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Heavy Surge Moderate
Ahihi Bay 4.5 🟑 Hazy E 10-15 mph 4-6 ft Surge Ledge Strong Surge

Description: Marginal: A new, long-period south swell is peaking today, generating breaking wave heights of 4–6 feet across South Maui. Β This morning the water is calmer in the Kamaole Beaches & Keawakapu area, including Ulua. Further south surf is rougher. Subsurface wave energy is churning up bottom sand, keeping the water columns hazy with fair visibility ranges.

KEY LEGEND

  • 🟒 (7.0-10.0) Good: Safe, clear water, low surge.
  • 🟑 (4.0-6.5) Marginal: Fair visibility, light surge. Use caution.
  • πŸ”΄ (0.0-3.5) Dangerous: High surf, strong currents, or turbid conditions. Avoid.

BEST TIME TO GO: Mid-morning window (9:00 AM to 12:30 PM) for flat reef slots along Northwest Maui (Kapalua or Honolua). South Maui is below advisory warnings but carries heavy surge and sand haze from the peaking swell.

MARINE ADVISORIES: A new, long-period south swell is peaking today, producing head-high to overhead wave faces up to 4 to 6 feet along exposed south-facing beaches. East trade winds remain steady at 10–15 mph, keeping east shore wind waves at 3 to 5 feet. The UV index is extreme through midday. No stream runoff warnings are in effect under mostly sunny skies.

Ocean conditions can change rapidly.Β  Watch the surf, waves, currents and surge on the shoreline, rocks and reefs. Always spend 5-10 minutes in snorkel meditation watching the conditions.Β  Savor the moment.Β  If the water doesn’t look clear, calm and inviting, don’t go in!
