North Shore

Conditions are improving but remain marginal this morning. The north-northeast swell that dominated earlier this week has declined to a manageable 3–5 feet, and trade winds have eased to around 10 mph. Anini remains the safest and clearest bet in the region, while Ke’e and Haena are still seeing “milky” visibility.

Location Rating Clarity Wind Waves/Surf
Ke’e Beach 4 🟑 Milky E 10 mph 3–5 ft
Haena State Park 4 🟑 Milky E 10 mph 3–5 ft
Hideaways 5 🟑 Fair E 10 mph 2–4 ft
Anini Beach 7 🟒 Good E 10 mph < 1 ft

East Shore

Conditions are poor. While the swell has dropped, steady trade winds are blowing directly onshore at 15–20 mph, creating choppy and turbulent surface conditions. Furthermore, a localized Brown Water Advisory remains in effect for the Lydgate to Wailua stretch. Visibility is very low due to wind-driven churn and active river runoff.

Location Rating Clarity Wind Waves/Surf
Lydgate Park 2 πŸ”΄ Murky ENE 15-20 mph 3–5 ft

South Shore

The South Shore continues to offer the best snorkeling on Kauai today. It is well-protected from the remaining northern swell energy, with very small surf at 1–2 feet. Clarity is high at both Poipu and the Beach House, though the light trade winds may create minor surface ripples by midday.

Location Rating Clarity Wind Waves/Surf
Poipu Beach Park 8 🟒 Clear E 10 mph 1–2 ft
Beach House 8 🟒 Clear E 10 mph 1 ft

Marine Advisories

  • Localized Brown Water Advisory: Still active for Lydgate Beach to Wailua Beach and Nawiliwili to Kalapaki Beach. Avoid these waters until they appear clear.
  • General Safety Note: Although the island-wide advisory was lifted on March 31, officials recommend staying out of any water that appears brown or murky for 48–72 hours after heavy rain.
  • Swell Update: A small west-northwest swell is expected to arrive late tonight and hold through the weekend, which may slightly increase surf on north-facing shores tomorrow.

Legend

  • 8.1–10 🟒 (Excellent): Safest conditions; high visibility; calm surface.
  • 5.1–8.0 🟒 (Good): Generally safe; visibility may be slightly limited.
  • 4.1–5.0 🟑 (Marginal): Use caution; limited visibility; noticeable surge.
  • 1.0–4.0 πŸ”΄ (Hazardous): High surf, dangerous surge, or brown water. STAY OUT.

Best Time to Snorkel: Between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. This window avoids the peak afternoon trade winds and takes advantage of the best morning clarity before the 3:28 PM high tide at Hanalei Bay.

Ocean conditions can change rapidly.Β  Watch the surf, waves, currents and surge on the shoreline, rocks and reefs. Always spend a few minutes (5-10) in snorkel meditation watching the conditions.Β  Savor the moment.Β  If the water doesn’t look clear, calm and inviting, don’t go in!
