Snorkel Sites: North
Honokohau Bay is 2.3 miles
north on Hwy. 19. Go left at the Honokohau Harbor sign, then
.9 miles to the south (left) side of the harbor entrance. Park
and walk 200 yards over the lava to the sandy beach/small cove.
You are here. Snorkel south and back. LOOKOUT! BOATS AND STUFF!

Kona
Coast State Park is
sand, lava, coral and all. Kona's newest State Park is just a
couple miles north of the airport on Hwy.19. Enjoy your drive
over an authentic Hawaiian lava field to a great picnic and snorkel
spot. Juveniles may BOOGIE here, too.
Anaeho'omalu
Bay (Waikoloa Beach Park) is 24.1 miles north on Hwy 19. Turn left at Waikoloa Beach
Drive and go .6 mile to the stop sign. Go left .3 mile and park.
Snorkel anywhere; the barrier reef protects.

Hapuna
State Park is vast beach
with white sand and is 7 miles north of Waikoloa on Hwy. 19.
Turn left at the Hapuna sign, go .4 and park. Beautiful beach
but really only fair snorkeling. Good body board waves off the
sandy beach, but BIG SURF IN WINTER!!#@%$$*&!!
Lapakahi
State Park is way
up north on Hwy. 270. About 10 miles past Kawaihae (can you say
THAT?) Harbor. Coral and rock beach, no crowds and best in early
AM--less wind (usually) so go early. Park closes at 4 PM already.

Snorkel Sites: South
White Sands Beach Park aka Disappearing
Sands or Magic Sands is 3 miles south of Snorkel Bob´s on
Alii Drive. Danger! Big Surf! Beach sand comes and goes (disappearing)
during various seasonal wave action. CAUTION! Rocks and surf can
be dangerous. But Magic Sands Beach got ono body board waves just
south of Laaloa Cover. Snorkel Ingress and egress is here too.
Coral arches and caves. Beware sea urchins!

Kealakekua
Bay (Marine
Preserve) is 5 miles south on Alii Drive. Go left at Keauhou 1.5
miles to Hwy 11. Go right on 11 for 7.2 miles to Kealakekua Bay
turnoff, then 4.5 miles down the mountain to Kealakekua Beach Park.
I, Snorkel Bob, jumped right off the old concrete pier.

Pu'uhonua
O Honaunau National Historic Park (City of Refuge) is $2 /head. 3.5 miles over the
rough coastline road (lava) south from Kelakekua Bay to the Park
Gate. From Kona take Hwy 11 south about 20 miles to Hwy. 160
and go right to the Park Gate. Ingress/egress from the sandy
cove fronting the palm stand. Head out toward the point with
the old Hawaiian Temple to Coral Paradise. Dozens of other spots
are known by your fellow snorkelers, whom you will meet on the
great snorkel byway. Always ask about the parking, surf, surge,
current, visibility, fish life and safety.
